Why I Started The Builder's Frequency
The pilot episode. Who I am, why I'm doing this, and what you can expect if you stick around. This is our first date — I promise to be interesting.
Episode Summary
I run two companies. I have a full-time job. I have two kids under five. And I just started a podcast.
In this pilot episode, I explain why I'm not crazy (well, maybe a little), introduce myself, and lay out what The Builder's Frequency is all about.
Key Topics
My Background
- Day job: Senior Test and Validation Engineer at Sonance — making sure speakers work before they end up in your living room
- Side ventures: Josh Levy Labs (test engineering consultancy) and The Lyceum (audio testing software)
- Family: Two sons (Jones and Jett — yes, it sounds like a law firm) and an incredibly patient wife, Jill
The Tension
The conventional wisdom says you have to choose: either an entrepreneur OR an employee. Burn the boats. Go all in.
I call BS on that.
Most businesses fail. If you've burned your boats and your business goes under, you're unemployed AND broke. There's another way.
The Realization
Your job isn't the obstacle. It's the foundation.
Your job is the investor that funds your experiments. It's the safety net that lets you take risks. It's the stable income that means you don't have to take every client — you can be selective.
The goal isn't escape. The goal is leverage.
The Five Pillars
Everything on this show revolves around five core themes:
-
AI for Builders — Practical AI tools and workflows. No hype, just what actually saves time and lets one person do the work of three.
-
Side Business While Employed — How to build something meaningful without quitting your job. What's legal, what's ethical, how not to burn out.
-
Audio & Hardware Engineering — My craft. Niche, but the principles of systems thinking and quality engineering apply everywhere.
-
Faith & Business — Ancient principles for modern entrepreneurship. Not preachy, but not hidden either.
-
Building Legacy — The why behind everything. Building something to hand down — not just money, but knowledge, systems, a way of thinking.
Who This Is For
- Corporate employees with a dream they haven't killed yet
- Engineers who think there's more to life than tickets and sprints
- Believers told that ambition is sinful
- Parents trying to build something AND be present for their kids
Who This Is NOT For
- People looking for "quit your job tomorrow" advice
- Get-rich-quick seekers
- Anyone wanting shortcuts (there aren't any)
Why "The Builder's Frequency"?
Two reasons:
-
I'm an audio engineer. Frequency is literally the language I speak.
-
Builders operate on a different frequency. We see opportunities where others see problems. We think in decades while others think in quarters.
This show is that channel. Your weekly signal when the noise gets loud.
Episode Quote
"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might." — Ecclesiastes 9:10
It's a call to presence. To excellence. To showing up fully for whatever you're building.
